Specifying Faucets for Hong Kong Apartments: Notes From a Local Interior Design Practice

Hong Kong apartments are among the most space-constrained homes in the developed
world. A typical private-housing bathroom is between 30 and 45 square feet, and the kitchen
is often a galley barely wide enough for two people to pass. Faucets that work perfectly well
in a North American or European home frequently do not fit — or do not perform —
in that context.

The notes below were compiled together with a Hong Kong design practice that specifies our
products on residential projects. They are aimed at distributors, contractors and specifiers
who are quoting for the Hong Kong and wider Greater Bay Area market.

1. Spout reach and height matter more than style

The single most common specification error we see in compact bathrooms is a spout that is
too tall or projects too far for the basin below. In a 30-square-foot bathroom the vanity is
often only 400–500 mm deep, and an undermount basin leaves very little margin.
A tall vessel-style mixer that looks striking in a showroom will splash across the countertop
every time it is used.

Practical rule used on site: the spout outlet should sit roughly over the centre of the
basin bowl, with 60–100 mm of clearance between the outlet and the water surface at
normal fill. For most Hong Kong undermount basins that means a standard-height single-handle
mixer rather than a high-arc model.

2. Water pressure varies dramatically by floor

Hong Kong’s high-rise residential stock means that mains pressure at the 45th floor behaves
very differently from the 3rd. Buildings use roof tanks, booster pumps or direct feed depending
on age and height, and the resulting working pressure across a single estate can range roughly
from 0.5 to 4 bar.

Two consequences for specification:

• Aerators should be matched, not assumed. A low-flow aerator tuned for high
  pressure will feel weak on a low-pressure floor.
• Ceramic cartridges must be rated for the upper end. Pressure spikes when a
  booster pump cycles are a common cause of premature cartridge failure.

3. Finish durability in a subtropical climate

Hong Kong sits at 80–85% relative humidity for much of the year, and most bathrooms
have either a small window or mechanical extraction only. Matte black and brushed finishes have
become the dominant request in residential design over the past few years, but they behave
differently under those conditions:

• Matte black hides water spotting and fingerprints far better than polished chrome — a real
  advantage given Hong Kong’s humid coastal climate.
• Brushed nickel and brushed gold show water spotting less than polished
  finishes but need a non-abrasive cleaner; household bleach-based bathroom sprays are the most
  common cause of finish damage we see reported.

4. Wall-mounted pot fillers in galley kitchens

A wall-mounted pot filler is usually thought of as a luxury item for large kitchens. In Hong
Kong it solves a genuinely practical problem: in a galley kitchen the sink and the hob are often
on opposite runs, and carrying a full stock pot across a 900 mm aisle is both awkward and a
scald risk.

Because the arms fold flat against the wall, the fitting adds almost nothing to the working
depth of the kitchen — which is exactly why it suits compact layouts.

5. Working with designers on specification

Faucet selection is usually made late in a renovation, after tiling and cabinetry are already
fixed — which is precisely when the constraints above become expensive to work around.
Bringing the sanitary ware schedule forward to the design stage avoids most of it.
